No More DDT...But it May Have Never Worked!
There’s a theory that the recent bedbug “epidemic” (as some have called it...and admittedly it does seem to be that way) has been caused by the ban of DDT, which reportedly kills some bird species. It was also the most effective pesticide to ward of bedbugs. So good, in fact, that for decades there were hardly any bedbug infestations reported...worldwide!However, there have also been studies showing that bedbugs in fact had become resistant to DDT back in the 1940s and became immune to the toxins. So, perhaps DDT never worked in the first place.
The fact of the matter is that DDT is no longer available, and bedbugs can build immunity to pesticides, so you cannot rely on a single method, or a single lethal chemical to rid your home of them.
Home-Use Pesticides: Temporary Solution?
If you are treating a bedbug infestation on our own, you should know that this may only be a temporary solution before you call in the professionals. It is difficult to truly manage an infestation on your own, given the pesticides available for purchase from stores is not nearly as potent as that which the professionals have, however for many reasons you may opt to do it yourself, even if it’s just for a quick fix. There are many brands available off the shelf, but remember to buy one that is specifically for bedbugs, talk to a professional at the store, a follow directions carefully.
Pesticides off the Shelf
What you will be looking for is a product containing naturally derived pyrethrins, or pyrethroids, which is an active ingredient in chrysanthemums which stimulate the bedbugs nervous system and the bug spasms, and is normally knocked out.Insect Growth Regulators do not kill adult bedbugs, but instead attack nymphs and eggs. The young bedbugs will never develop properly, and therefore will not be able to reproduce.
Remember, as Some General Guidelines that You Should Always Keep in Mind:
- Never spray chemicals where children or pets are present.
- Never buy an insecticide or pesticide anywhere other than at a certified retailer.
- Never spray surfaces where human contact is possible. Eg. Sofas, mattresses, rugs, etc.
- Never use a product for a reason other than its intended use.
- Never use pesticides intended for another type of insect.
